What is a Healthy Diet?

In brief, it is a diet that helps in improving as well as maintaining your health (both mental and physical). It includes all the body Systems, and not one particular System. With correct intake of macro- and micro-nutrients, fibers and fluids, this healthy diet takes care of the body in an essentially nutritive way.

And this is Most Important

Healthy Diet helps the body cope with malnutrition, fight with various diseases (diabetes, cancer, blood pressure, heart-related, and many others), and with day-to-day little health issues that otherwise get affected by an unhealthy diet and lifestyle.

Always Keep in Mind

There is an old saying, “What is best for the tongue, is worst for the body; vice-versa, what is bland for the tongue, is best for the body.”

(a) eat home-cooked (but NOT over-cooked as the food will lose all its nutrition) food as much as you can

(b) try to totally avoid outside-cooked food (except on emergency like traveling, attending meetings, attending functions/weddings/parties) – though made fresh, certain taste enhancers like MSG (ajinomoto) harm the liver in the long run

(c) make sure to wash – veggies, fruits, non-veg, legumes, lentils, grains – these well before cooking

(d) STOP eating stale food – cook only that much that is needed

(e) daily meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) should be healthy and a balanced combination of protein-carbohydrates-dietary fats (NEVER base your meals on only 1 macro-nutrient)

(f) our body requires all the 3 macro-nutrients to function. You have to know how to balance these with each other as per your daily nutrition requirements

Only Healthy Diet will Never Help

Healthy diet, along with other aspects of fit and healthy lifestyle like physical activities, sleeping and waking up on time, having meals on time, taking medicines on time, whatever – focus should be on all. One without the other will NEVER work.

All you need is “finding time for yourself” so that your body can benefit from all.

What’s to be Done where Overall Health is Concerned?

To start with (sooner the better), give your best to:

1. maintain blood pressure at normal range

2. manage healthy body weight: in general, be man or woman, your physique should be “mesomorphic” – neither slim nor fat

3. get TGL, LDL and VLDL in the normal range

4. keep blood sugar level in control

5. get blood tests done every 6 months (if you are 50+) or once a year (if you are below 50) to get a picture of your body’s functions
